To Those Who Say Loving The Prophet ﷺ Too Much Leads To Shirk

Bismillah-ir Rahman-ir Raheem

Loving Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is the religion; and knowing his station (peace be upon him) is the religion! Loving him (peace be upon him) is a PART of the religion, and if you do not have this part you do not have the religion! Shaykh Faid Mohammed Said tells us why.

Whilst in Makkah, during my recent trip, I had the opportunity to converse with some of the scholars of Makkah; may Allah Most High bless the scholars, one of whom said: “I think people are exaggerating when they speak about the love of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and I fear their exaggeration will lead them to shirk (polytheism).”

I said: may Allah bless you and open the doors of goodness for you, I understand your concern is about tawhid (the oneness of God), but we should see what the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

In a Hadith, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said if a person possesses three things he will taste the sweetness of faith:

  1. the first is to love Allah Most High and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) more than anyone or thing,
  2. second, to love whom you love for the sake of Allah Most High, and
  3. third, to dislike returning to deviance after having been saved and guided from it by Allah Most High as much as he would hate being thrown into the fire. (Imam Muslim)

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said in this hadith that the first of the three is to love Allah Most High and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him); he did not say love Allah Most High and then love the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used the word and because loving the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is loving Allah Most High!

In another hadith, narrated in Muslim and Bukhari, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: None of you believe until he loves me more than himself, his children and his parents.

And as narrated in Bukhari (6257), Syedina Omar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), I love you more than anything but myself.”

To which the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied: “No! I swear by the One in whose Hand is my soul, you cannot claim iman until I am more beloved to you than yourself!”

Then Syedina Omar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Now, by Allah Most High, you are more beloved to me than myself!”

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): “Now, Ya Omar, you can claim iman!”

Recalling this hadith, I said to our brother that the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) were not even worried about loving him (peace be upon him) more than themselves!

If you think you are trying to compare between Allah Most High and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and in doing so you say to yourself that you do not want to make them on the same level (to avoid shirk), and hence you think to lower the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) slightly to insure the safety of your iman – that is the danger that should cause us to worry!

Our love for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is love for Allah Most High!

This confuses some as they are unable to understand Allah Most High, and so they are fearful of relating or mixing – this fear in itself is shirk!

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said in a hadith that we should love Allah Most High for all the blessings He bestows upon us, love the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) because Allah Most High loves him, and to love the family of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) because of our love for him!

So our love for Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is love for Allah Most High!

The Qur’an describes aspects of the station of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and Allah Most High love for him. Allah Most High teaches us in the Qur’an in Surah Ash-Shu’ara (82), that Ibrahim (peace be upon him) begged Allah Most High for forgiveness: “And I hope that He will forgive my sins on the Day of Judgment.”

And what did Allah Most High say to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in Surah Al-Fath: “That Allah has forgiven you for what preceded of your sin and what will follow and complete His favor upon you and guide you to a straight path.”

Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) is begging Allah Most High and Allah Most High is giving the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) without him even asking!

Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said in Surah Ibrahim (35): “…protect my children and I from worshipping idols”

And Allah Most High said to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in Surah Al Ahzab (33): “…Allah intends only to remove from you the impurity, O people of the household, and to purify you completely.”

Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) is begging for purification, and Allah Most High is granting the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his family full purification!

In Surah As-Saffat (99), Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) states that: “Indeed, I will go to my Lord.”

And in Surah Al-Isra (1), Allah Most High says: “Glory to the One who took His slave at night…”

Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) is going and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is being taken!

In Surah Ahli-Imran (173), Allah Most High relates to us the words of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him): “Allah Most High is my Sponsor and He is the best of Sponsors.”

And in Surah Al-Anfal (64), Allah Most High says to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): “Oh Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), Allah Most High is your Sponsor…!”

Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) is stating the Allah Most High is his Sponsor, whilst Allah Most High is telling us that He is the Sponsor of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)!

In Surah Ash-Shua’ra (87), Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) asks Allah Most High: “And do not disgrace me on the Day they are [all] resurrected.”

And in Surah At-Tahrim (8), Allah Most High says: “…the Day when Allah will not disgrace the Prophet and those who believed with him.” (peace be upon him)

Not only did Allah Most High tell us that there will be no disgrace upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), but that Allah Most High will also not disgrace the believers because of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)!

Within all these ayat we see the greatness of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), Khalilullah, the one that Allah Most High chose as a friend, the one described as an entire ummah, the one in whose lineage all the subsequent Prophets reside, but yet we see the greatest station in the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)!

Loving the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is faith. If the ummah were to have this love, we would not be where we are now. Do not fear shirk for the one who loves; we should fear for the one who does not love. LOVE IS NOT THE CAUSE OF OUR ISSUES; IT IS THE LACK OF SUCH LOVE!

May Allah Most High guide us to iman, and make us worthy of following the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).

May Allah Most High reward our friend with the best, as he made us cry in the House of Allah Most High!

Our encounter reminded us of the great ulema of the past, in that once they had a discussion and they felt the outcome of the discussion in their heart, they would leave whatever stance they were upon. As such, we were humbled to meet this alim, as it reminded us of the great ulema: Imam Shafi (may Allah be pleased with him) held the opinion that you cannot benefit from the skin of a dead animal or the child of a dead animal because Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to not benefit or use anything from a dead animal (narrated by Imam Ahmad). In a discussion that took place between the great scholar Ishaq ibn Rahaway (may Allah be pleased with him) and Imam Shafi (may Allah be pleased with him), the later stated that he believed that one could not benefit from the skin of a dead animal, to which Imam Ishaq (may Allah be pleased with him) said that one can benefit from the skin of a dead animal if it is cleaned properly, as that was mentioned by Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Upon hearing this, Imam Shafi (may Allah be pleased with him) left his opinion because of the hadith that was narrated, and coincidentally, Imam Ishaq (may Allah be pleased with him) left his opinion upon hearing the hadith narrated by Imam Shafi (may Allah be pleased with him)!

Our brother reminded us of them.

May Allah Most High bless us and open our hearts to the love of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Allahumma salli alaa Syedina Muhammad wa alaa Ahli Syedina Muhammad, fi kulli lamhatin wa nafasin ‘adada maa wa see-a-hu ‘il-muLLAH

Shall I face the Qibla with my back towards the blessed resting place of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when making du’ā?

Imam Mālik (rahimahu Llah) was asked by the Khalif Abu Ja’far al-Mansūr:

Shall I face the Qibla with my back towards the blessed resting place of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when making du’ā?

Imam Mālik (rahimahu Llah) replied,

How could you turn your face away from him ﷺ when he is your means (wasīla) and your father Adam’s means to Allah on the Day of Rising? No, rather you should face him ﷺ and ask for his intercession so that Allah will grant it to you, for Allah said, ‘If they had only, when they were unjust to themselves, come to you and asked Allah’s forgiveness, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah Oft-Returning, Most Merciful (Q4:64)’.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s supplication after the night time prayer

Ibn-i Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates:

“I once heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say the following supplication after the night time prayer:

“O Allah! I ask that You give me from Your Presence such mercy that with it You will guide my heart, regulate my affairs, and put order into my disorder. And that you will fill me with perfect faith, and bestow on my outer, good deeds and You will render my deeds pure and sincere, and inspire me with a suitable way to gain Your pleasure, and give us friends that will be familiar to me and protect me from all manner of evil.

O Allah! Give me such faith, such conviction that leaves no prospect for unbelief. Give me such mercy that with it I can reach a station in this world and the next, which is worthwhile in Your eyes.

O Allah! I ask you for salvation by Your grace in Your judgement of us. I implore of You a special rank worthy of the martyrs (who are close to You), I wish for the life of Your happy slaves, and I ask you for help against our enemies.

O Allah! Even though my understanding is limited and my deeds are few, I bring to your door my (worldly and otherworldly needs) and ask that You meet them. I am in need of Your Mercy, and I present my state to you.

O my Sustainer who judges all affairs and brings them about and who sees the needs of the hearts and offers the cure. As you have separated the seas, I ask that you separate me from the fire of Hell. I ask to be protected from destruction and from the torture of the grave.

O Allah! If there is any goodness in any of your slaves or any bounty that You have promised Your creatures that I have not been able to perceive or that has not been included in my intention and has thus remained outside of my petition, then O Lord of the Worlds, I ask You to bring it about and bestow it upon me out of Your mercy.

O Allah! O Possessor of the strong rope and correct path (such as the Qur’an and the religion). On the Day of Judgement on which you have promised the unbelievers hellfire , I ask you for safety against the hellfire, and on the day after which eternity begins I ask you for Paradise along with those angels that have attained to your Great Presence, together with those who made much bowing and prostration in this world, and who kept their promise. You are the Possessor of endless mercy, You are the Possessor of endless love, You do whatever You wish (however much the petitioners ask for and no matter how big You are capable of granting them all.)

O Allah! Make us of those who have not strayed nor caused others to stray and make us guides of guidance who have attained to guidance. Make us vehicles for peace amongst our friends and enemies to our enemies. We love those who love you because of their love for You. We are enemies of those who go against You because of their animosity to You.

O Allah! This is our prayer. It is up to you whether You accept it with your gracious beneficence. This is our struggle and You are our support.

O Allah! Fill my heart with light, and my grave with light; place light in front of me, and light behind me; place light on my right and light on my left; place light above me and light below me; place light in my ears and light in my eyes, and light in my hair and my skin and my flesh and my blood and my bones.

O Allah increase my light, give me such light that it is worth all of what I have said and a light that will encompass everything that I could not say. Glory be to the One Who is enveloped in dignity and Who has made Himself known by His dignity. I glorify the One who has enveloped Himself in greatness and who, for this reason, continually offers extensive bounty to His slaves. I glorify the One who is the only One worthy of glorification and holiness. I glorify the One who possesses majesty and beneficence. I glorify the One who possesses majesty and kindness. He is above all faults”. (Tirmidhi, Deavat,
30/3419)

Reality of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

It is the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, master of all the prophets, who was the unique figure, for it was he who turned time and space into a garden. Over 23 years of mission, he offered humanity a rose garden that does not fade. During his time of prophethood, the right and the wrong, in their entirety, became crystal-clear. Human perceptions about the creator, the universe, and the nature of the self were all clarified by him. At that time, humans grasped that this world is a testing ground. An ignorant society turned into a society based on knowledge. Believers began to understand that the human body emerges from a drop of water, that birds emerge from eggs, and that trees and vegetables emerge from seeds. The faithful began to contemplate the logic and meaning of creation, and their souls set out toward infinite horizons of wisdom.

It was the Prophet’s ﷺ training which permitted the community he led to develop the highest degree of compassion, devotion, sacrifice, and sensitivity toward justice. The Messenger ﷺ became the center of a fellowship whose life was founded upon winning the pleasure of Allah. All hearts were then filled with the excitement of the quest. Everyone asked, “What does Allah wants from us? In what condition would the Prophet  ﷺ wish to see us?” In this way, night turned into day, and winter turned into spring. Thus that age of human history became a true Golden Age.

So gracious was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that through his presence, many dark wells were filled with glorious light. 

Every living being survives in the environment appropriate to its nature. This natural law holds for humans as well. Bees require blooming flowers, and cannot live without them. Rats inhabit filthy places, and do not flourish in rose gardens. In just this way, sub- lime souls are nurtured by the glory emanating from the Reality of Muhammad ﷺ. Evil souls thrive in malice.

Hadrat Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, used to look at the face of the Prophet  ﷺ and say in amazement, “O my Lord! What a beautiful face!” What Abu Bakr was witnessing was own his inner world reflected in the Prophet’s ﷺ face. Thus when the Prophet ﷺ said: “I have not made use of anyone else’s property as I have used the property of Abu Bakr,” Abu Bakr replied in tears, “O Messenger of Allah! Do not I and my property belong you?” (Ibn Maja, Muqaddimah 11). These words are clear evidence that Abu Bakr committed himself so fully to the Prophet ﷺ that he united himself with him. He made his inner world a mirror for the Prophet ﷺ. On the other hand, Abu Jahl, the chief enemy of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, used to have an aversion for the face of the Prophet. Looking at him, he would not receive a positive reflection, but was confronted by his own faithlessness and violence. Each saw his own real personality, his inner world, in the Prophet’s face.

Prophets are like shining mirrors. In them, everyone sees his or her image, his or her inner world. No mirror lies to the person who gazes at it. Mirrors reflect the true image of the one who looks.

BENEFITS OF GIVING REWARD OF SALAWAT TO OTHERS

Durood

A woman came to Sayyidina Hassan Al-Basri (rahimahullah) and said,

My daughter passed away and now I wish to see her in my dream.

Sayyidina Hassan (rahimahullah) told her,

Offer four rakat Nafl after Isha and in each rakaat recite Surah At-Takasur (102). Then go to sleep while reciting Salawaat upon RasulAllah ﷺ until you fall asleep.

The woman did so and narrated the dream to Sayyidina Hassan (rahimahullah) the next day. She said,

I saw her in a bad state. She was wearing dirty robes. Her hands were tied and there were chains of fire around her feet.

Sayyidina Hassan (rahimahullah) asked her to give sadqa and hope that her daughter’s affliction gets lessened. The following night Sayyidina Hassan (rahimahullah) himself saw a dream wherein he was in Jannah and there was a beautiful young girl on a throne dressed in magnificent clothes. She told him that she was the daughter of the woman who had visited him. Sayyidina Hassan (rahimahullah) told her,

But your mother told me that she saw you in a bad state.

The girl said,

Indeed what she said was true. We were 70,000 souls who were afflicted with the torture of the grave until a pious person passed by us. He recited Salawat upon RasulAllah ﷺ dedicated it’s sawaab to us. And Allah accepted it in such a manner that we were freed from our tribulations and what you see now is due to barakah of that Durood Shareef.

ہو نہ يہ پھول تو بلبل کا ترنم بھی نہ ہو
چمن دہر ميں کليوں کا تبسم بھی نہ ہو
يہ نہ ساقی ہو تو پھرمے بھی نہ ہو، خم بھی نہ ہو
بزم توحيد بھی دنيا ميں نہ ہو، تم بھی نہ ہو

Ho Na Ye Phool To Bulbul Ka Tarannum Bhi Na Ho
Chaman-e-Dehr Mein Kaliyon Ka Tabassum Bhi Na Ho
Ye Na Saqi Ho To Phir Mai Bhi Na Ho, Khum Bhi Na Ho
Bazm-e-Touheed Bhi Dunya Mein Na Ho, Tum Bhi Na Ho

If this fair flower (Muhammad) blossom not, the nightingale will not sing,
Nor rose‐buds make the garden of era smile welcoming in the spring,
If he is not the quencher, then nor jar nor wine will be,
Nor in this world will Tawheed (Oneness of God) shine, Nor your heart beat in you!

Balaghal ula bikamaalihi- POEM ABOUT THE MIR’AJ

Balaghal ula bikamaalihi
He [Muhammad ﷺ ] reached the highest place by his Perfection.

Kasha fad-dujaa bijamaalihi
He removed darkness by his Beauty.

Hasunat jami’u khisaalihi
Beautiful are all his Attainments

Sallu ‘alayhi wa aalihi
Send blessings to Him and his Family

This quatrain (ruba’i – Poem) was written by Shaykh Saadi Shirazi (rahimahu Llah) and is found in the introduction to his “Gulistan”. This most famous (ruba’i – Poem) written by Shaykh Saadi Shirazi (rahimahu Llah) covering the event of Mir’aj of our Beloved Prophet (salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). There is a very interesting event behind this ruba’i, when Shaykh Saadi (rahimahu Llah) wrote this ruba’i he was not getting the last line which would complete the ruba’i and because of this he was not satisfied and was worried, what is lacking, why I’m not unable to complete the last line and in these thought he slept, what Shaykh Saadi (rahimahu Llah) saw was unbelievable.

He found himself at the court of our Beloved Prophet (salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) surrounded by Sahaba Karam (radi Allah ‘anhum). The Prophet (salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) asked Shaykh Saadi (rahimahu Llah)

what happen why are u worried what has disturb you.

Shaykh Saadi (rahimahu Llah) replied

Ya Rasulullah (salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) I have written a ruba’i in Your praise but I am not getting the last line.

The Beloved Prophet (salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied

Read it here what have u written.

Shaykh Sadi (rahimahu Llah) read the above lines; and got stuck our Beloved Prophet (salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) then completed the ruba’i by saying sallu ‘alayhi wa aalihi (Send blessings to Him and his Family).
