Definition of Milad-un-Nabi

The word Milad has been derived from “viladut” which means birth. Therefore, according to the Arabic language, Milad is a word which signifies the place and time of birth. In the light of Shariah, we mean, Milad is to remember the events which took place at the birth time of the Holy Prophet (salallaho alaihi wasalam) and we get the opportunity of narrating the Seerat of the Prophet (salallaho alaihi wasalam) on this occasion.  We also present the Holy Prophet (salallaho alaihi wasalam) gifts of Durood -o- salam. We mention before the people attributes and praises of the Prophet (salallaho alaihi wasalam). We do not believe that Milad is restricted to only one day but we believe that the remembrance of the Holy Prophet (salallaho alaihi wasalam) is incumbent in every minute and second of time.   Milad un Nabi (salallaho alaihi wasalam) is a great source of preaching. It is an opportunity for dawah and the scholars to teach Muslims on this Holy occasion, moral behavior of the Holy Prophet, (salallaho alaihi wasalam) His etiquettes, His affairs, His Seerat, His dealings and His shamail.

Understanding through Al-Qur’an wal Furqan and It’s sciences

Evidence No.1 – Holy Qur’an states:

Say: “In the bounty of God. And in His Mercy,  in that“LET THEM REJOICE”: that is better than the (wealth) they hoard [Surah Yunus, 10:58]
Some might think in their wildest of imaginations that birth and arrival of Prophet (salallaho alaihi wasalam) is not a mercy, some even falsely limit the Mercies of Allah by saying that mercy mentioned here does not refer to Prophet Muhammad (salallaho alaihi wasalam) thus we should not rejoice, so in reply to such people the best answer is found in Tafsir of Qur’an through Qur’an itself.

Holy Qur’an states at another place:

Translation: We have not sent you but as a “Mercy to the worlds” [Surah al-Anbiya, 21:107]

Hence without any shadow of doubt the arrival of our beloved Prophet (Peace & Blessings be upon him) is a mercy not only upon us but all worlds and creations of Allah azza Wajjal, thus we should rejoice as ordered in Qur’an [10:58]

Imam Ibn al-Jawzi (Rahimuhullah) explains for this verse [Surah Yunus 10:58] in his Tafsir:

Translation: ad-Dhahak narrated from Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) that Bounty mentioned in this verse means Knowledge (i.e of Qur’an and Tawhid) whereas Mercy means Muhammad (Salallaho alaihi wasalam) [Ibn Jawzi Z’ad al Maseer fi Ilm at Tafsir, (4/40)]

Imam Abu Hayyan al Andalusi (Rahimuhullah) also says:

Translation: Bounty refers to Knowledge whereas Mercy refers to Muhammad (salallaho alaihi wasalam) [Tafsir Al-Bahr al Muheet, (5/171)]

Imam Jalal uddin Suyuti (Rahimuhullah) says:
{ وما أرسلناك إلا رحمة للعالمين }

Abu Sheikh (rah) narrated from Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) That Bounty of Allah means Knowledge, whereas Mercy means Muhammad (Salallaho alaihi wasalam) Almighty Allah said: We have sent thee not but as Mercy to Worlds (Al Anbiya: 107) [As-Suyuti in Dur al Manthur (4/330)]

Allama Aloosi (rah) explains that even Fadhl (i.e. bounty) refers to Prophet Muhammad (salallaho alaihi wassalam)

Narrated by Al Khatib (rah) and Ibn Asakir (rah) that Bountry refers to An-Nabi (Alaih Salatu Wassalam) [Al-Alusi in Ruh al Ma’ani (11/141)]

Evidence No. 2  – Holy Qur’an states:

Translation:  That is the bounty of Allah; which He giveth unto whom He will. Allah is of Infinite Bounty [Surah Al Jumuah 62:4]

Hadrat Abdullah Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) explains “Allah is of infinite bounty” as:

(Allah is of infinite bounty) by bestowing Islam and prophethood upon Muhammad (salallaho alaihi wasalam); and it is also said this means: by bestowing Islam upon the believers; and it is also said this means: by sending the Messenger and Scripture to His created beings.[Tanwir al Miqbas Min Tafsir Ibn Abbas]

Evidence No. 3 – Qur’an states regarding Yahya (Alayhissalam):

Translation:  Peace be upon him the day he was born, the day that he dies, and the day that he will be raised up alive [Surah al-Maryam, 19:15]

So the days when Anbiya are born are days of “Tranquility” in sight of Allah.

Evidence No. 4  Qur’an states:

We sent Moses with Our signs (and the command). “Bring out your people from the depths of darkness into light, and teach them to remember the “Days of Allah (بِأَيَّامِ اللَّهِ).” Verily in this there are Signs for such as are firmly patient and constant,- grateful and appreciative. [Surah Ibrahim, 14:5]

What are the Ayyam of Allah? Imam al-Bayhaqi narrates in his Shu’ab al Iman that Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: The Days of Allah are his “Blessings and Signs” [Tafsir Ruh ul Ma’ani under Surah Ibrahim 14:5]

Evidence No. 5  Qur’an states:

Eisa, the son of Maryam, said, “O Allah, O our Lord! Send down to us a table spread from heaven, so that it may become a day of celebration for us – for our former and latter people – and a sign from You; and give us sustenance – and You are the Best Provider Of Sustenance.” [Surah Al-Maidah, 5:114]

The day when food is sent from skies is day of rejoicing (EID); then the day when soul of universe Peace be with him was born must be the delight for the day of rejoicing.

Evidence No. 6  Qur’an states:

It is He Who has sent His Noble Messenger with the guidance and the true religion, in order to make it prevail over all other religions; and Allah is sufficient as a Witness. [Surah Al-Fath, 48:28]

Evidence No. 7  Qur’an states:

And remember when Eisa the son of Maryam said, “O Descendants of Israel! Indeed I am Allah’s Noble Messenger towards you, confirming the Book Torah which was before me, and heralding glad tidings of the Noble Messenger who will come after me – his name is Ahmed (the Praised One)”; so when Ahmed came to them with clear proofs, they said, “This is an obvious magic.” [Surah As-Saff, 61:6]

Evidence No. 8  Qur’an states:

Indeed there has come to you a Noble Messenger from among you – your falling into hardship aggrieves him, most concerned for your well being, for the Muslims most compassionate, most merciful. [Surah Tauba, 9:128]

Evidence No. 9  Qur’an states:
Allah has indeed bestowed a great favour upon the Muslims, in that He sent to them a Noble Messenger (Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) from among them, who recites to them His verses, and purifies them, and teaches them the Book and wisdom; and before it, they were definitely in open error. [Surah Aal-e-Imran, 3:164]

Evidence No. 10  Qur’an states:

I swear by this city (Makka), and you (O Muhammad) are residing in it, And by a father and whom he begot. [Surah al-Balad 90, Verse 1-3]

This verse is an oath regarding all those fathers in whose loins the light of the Prophet  passed until it reached his grandfather, ‘Abdul Muttalib and from him, ‘AbdAllah. From him, it went to Amina radiyAllahu ‘anha. Hence, an oath has been taken regarding all those people who were ancestors of the Prophet .

After taking an oath regarding the begetter (father), the verse mentions the begot which shows that the whole lineage is part of the oath. Qadi Thana’ Allah Pani Patti commentates on the verse:  “The word Walid in this verse refers to either Adam and Ibrahim (Alaihim assalam) or all forefathers and Walad refers to the Prophet . [al-Tafsir al-Mazhari]

May we be sacrificed at this Merriment O blessed month of Rabi’ al-Awwal!!
Your joys surpass thousands of ‘Eids; All in the world are rejoicing, except Shaytan
